Members remain anonymous to protect the organization, their professional and private lives, the lives of others and most importantly, those seeking help with their drinking problem. AA does not affiliate with any other organization or group but will cooperate with anyone to help the still suffering alcoholic. AA has been recognized as one of the most important movements of the 20th century, offering a solution not only to those suffering from alcoholism; but to their loved ones, friends, communities.

Beginners’ AA Meetings

Everywhere you go there are AA meetings where only women or men are allowed. You will also find many meetings that are gay, and some gay men’s meetings. This is to create safety when sharing about gender-specific issues. For instance, a member may be going through a heartbreaking divorce or having a problem in their marriage or another romantic relationship.

The speaker is invariably somebody with a few years or even decades sober. You may find yourself leaving the speaker meeting with the feeling that you just enjoyed a standup comedy act. Many people in recovery have a dark sense of humor and we mainly laugh at ourselves. After years and sometimes decades of drinking we’re easy targets to poke fun at.AA speakers tell their story and frequently the story is sad (but also funny). It’s easy to laugh when somebody at the podium cracks a joke about, for instance, going to jail and being the smelliest bum in the holding cell. You may be shocked to hear the whole room laughing about something most people wouldn’t find very funny.

Finding an AA Meeting

All participants had a Roman Catholic affiliation. The mean of abstinence duration for participants was relatively long, which means that they can be treated as addicts with stable abstinence. Statistics of demographic variables are presented in Table 1. Most of the study participants were men with secondary and vocational education. On average they have stayed in abstinence longer than six years and have participated in AA longer than eight years. Their mean quantity of completed steps was also relatively high.

Most researchers have focused on abstinence duration or reduced drinking as a recovery indicators. Contrary to most recent studies, subjective well-being was used as a recovery indicator instead of abstinence duration or reduced drinking. It is due to the fact that abstinence is not the same phenomenon as sobriety. Abstinence exclusively refers to the symptoms of the disease, while sobriety is something deeper, manifesting in emotional and mental dimensions, being an expression of sobriety 16. Existential well-being 17,18 is another construct than subjective well-being 19, but both of them are strictly related.

How Often Should You Attend AA Meetings?

Still other meetings use a dial-in conference call number. Meetings are held in-person, online, or on the telephone. The members of each meeting decide when, where, and how often they will meet.
